Una consacrazione nella luce del risorto

P. Jacques Suaudeau

And they shall look upon me whom they have pierced” (Zechariah 12:9).
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.  The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.” (John 19:34-35).
By his death Christ gave his life to the world. The shedding of blood and water symbolically expresses the Paschal Mystery, the passage from death to life. Water symbolizes the resurrection, life in the Spirit, the sacraments of the Church; blood is a sign of salvation.
“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’
” (John 7:37-39).

The devotion to the Sacred Heart begins at Calvary, where the divine Heart, pierced by the spear of the centurion, lets out blood and water, water to wash, blood to redeem men. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”. (John, 15,13).

We are moving forward along the Holy Week, trying to live every day the Passion and death of Christ in order to fully welcome the joy and the energy of his Resurrection.
At the same time, as members of the FIAMC, we are also moving towards the consecration of the catholic medical doctors to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which will take place on June 21 in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
It is in the light of the Cross and the Resurrection of our Lord that this Consecration takes on all its meaning and value

It is indeed anchored in the Devotion to the Sacred Heart.
The devotion to the Heart of Jesus is the synthesis of the whole Catholic religion,” Pope Pius XII said. Everything comes to us from the Heart of Jesus: the Church, Forgiveness, the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary.
Pope Benedict XVI expressed this that way:
Moreover, not only does this mystery of God’s love for us constitute the content of the worship of and devotion to the Heart of Jesus, but in the same way it is likewise the content of all true spirituality and Christian devotion. It is consequently important to stress that the basis of the devotion is as old as Christianity itself. Indeed, it is only possible to be Christian by fixing our gaze on the Cross of our Redeemer, “on him whom they have pierced” (Jn 19: 37; cf. Zc 12: 10).
The foundation of this devotion is as ancient as Christianity itself. Indeed, being a Christian is only possible by looking to the Cross of our Redeemer, to “the one they pierced” (Jn 19:37; cf. Za 12:10). (Benedict XVI, letter to RP Kolvenbach, 15 May 2006)

Pope Benedict XVI, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Encyclical of Pius XII “Haurietis aquas“, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gave us in a few words the meaning of this devotion, deeply rooted in the spirit and heart of the Church and the faithful:
The Encyclical Haurietis Aquas rightly recalls that for countless souls the wound in Christ’s side and the marks left by the nails have been “the chief sign and symbol of that love” that ever more incisively shaped their life from within (cf. n. 52). Recognizing God’s love in the Crucified One became an inner experience that prompted them to confess, together with Thomas:  “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20: 28), and enabled them to acquire a deeper faith by welcoming God’s love unreservedly (cf. Haurietis Aquas, n. 49).”

The devotion to the Sacred Heart has a double object, one sensitive and corporeal, the other invisible and spiritual. The sensitive object is the  Heart of Jesus’ body, united to his divinity. The spiritual object is the charity of Christ, his love for men, which he witnessed to in the Passion and the Eucharist. The total object is the whole of the Heart of Jesus,  symbol of his charity,  at the same time the heart of a God and the heart of a man; the divine and uncreated love of the Son and his human and created love.

Several messages were addressed to Saint Marguerite Mary Alacoque, the Saint of Paray the Monial, by our Lord Jesus Christ. The most significant revelation occurred on June 16, 1675, the day of Corpus Christi, giving us the Word that is at the heart of devotion to the Sacred Heart:
Behold the Heart that has so loved men. …Instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of humankind) only ingratitude,”
In the formula, ” Behold the Heart that has so loved men “, this “Heart which is humanly divine and divinely human” (Cardinal de Bérulle) the Sacred Heart is offered to all who will go to it, accepting the sufferings of life.
The Heart remains fundamentally the symbol of Love, of the free gift of self. It is a wounded, merciful love that is expressed through the episode of transfixion. This love goes as far as the ultimate sacrifice, the total gift of self.
The pierced Heart manifests the eternal openness of the Heart of God, its contemplation led into the depths of the mystery of salvation, into intimate union with Christ.

It was not until Saint Francis de Sales (1567-1622) that the cult of the Sacred Heart became a public cult. With the help of Saint Jeanne de Chantal, he founded the Order of the Visitation with the coat of arms of a heart pierced by two arrows, encircled by thorns and surmounted by a cross.
Saint John Eudes (1601-1680), founder of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary in 1643 (the eudists), was the first to to give liturgical worship to the Sacred Heart (1672). He brought the devotion to the Sacred Heart into the palace and the family of Louis XIV by preaching at the court from 1671 to 1674. In 1674 Saint John Eudes received 14,000 pounds from the King for the construction in Caen of the first church erected to the Sacred Heart, and the solemn feast of the Sacred Heart was celebrated in Montmartre on October 20. Seven other churches were then authorized by the Pope to open and dedicate themselves to the cult of the Sacred Heart.

What is remarkable is that, barely born, this devotion to the Sacred Heart will lead to another movement, that of the Consecration to the Sacred Heart.

In 1890 the Visitation of Paray-le-Monial received one and a half million consecrations of families of the whole world, and in 1893 Montmartre counted 2.226.048 such consecrations.
The consecration of the municipalities also participated in the campaign from 1890. The union of the municipalities of France manages the movement.
On June 16th, 1875, Pie IX dedicated the Christian universe to the Sacred Heart.

The golden age of the Sacred  Heart reached its peak thanks to Marie du Divin Coeur, of the order of Notre-Dame de Charité founded in Caen in 1641 by Saint John Eudes. She asked to the Pope, on behalf of Christ, to consecrate the human race to the Sacred  Heart.
Pope Léon XIII agreed to this proposal in 1899 and published the encyclical ” Annum Sacrum.  The Holy Father  justified in the following words the consecration:
And since there is in the Sacred Heart a symbol and a sensible image of the infinite love of Jesus Christ which moves us to love one another, therefore is it fit and proper that we should consecrate ourselves to His most Sacred Heart-an act which is nothing else than an offering and a binding of oneself to Jesus Christ, seeing that whatever honor, veneration and love is given to this divine Heart is really and truly given to Christ Himself.”
And Léon XIII officializes a new ” Labarum “:
When the Church, in the days immediately succeeding her institution, was oppressed beneath the yoke of the Caesars, a young Emperor saw in the heavens a cross, which became at once the happy omen and cause of the glorious victory that soon followed. And now, to-day, behold another blessed and heavenly token is offered to our sight -the most Sacred Heart of Jesus, with a cross rising from it and shining forth with dazzling splendor amidst flames of love. In that Sacred Heart all our hopes should be placed, and from it the salvation of men

At the request of pope Benoît XV, cardinal Amette, archbishop of Paris,  encouraged ” a very wholesome practice “, the consecration of Families to the Sacred  Heart.

Then cardinal Amette,  in a ” letter of May 24th, 1915 “, proposed ” the Consecration of France to the Sacred Heart. On Friday, June 11th, 1915, feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with his bishops, his priests, in the presence of members of parliament and catholic senators, the cardinal dedicated France to the Sacred Heart

It is in this perspective and in this spirit of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and at the same time of a consecration to this Heart, source of all Mercy, that the FIAMC will commit itself, in the name of all catholic medical doctors, on June 21, “under the banner of Christ”, to receive every grace, every energy and every hope. This commitment will be made under the sign of the blood and water flowing from the open side of Christ towards the world to purify it, and give it all energy to fight victoriously against evil. Christian doctors today need this energy to continue their day-to-day work in the service of the sick and in the service of life, despite the contrary, destructive forces that would prevent them from doing so.

On this ascent to Easter, let us contemplate Christ, dying on the cross, and his open flank from which water and blood flow upon the world. The image of the Lord, forever imprinted on the linen cloth of the Shroud of Turin, will help us. The astonishing image of the Shroud is a strong reminder of what the Lord wanted to endure for us, the concrete mark of his infinite love for humanity, engraved in his flesh and blood.
The fascination with the contemplation of the body printed on the canvas of the Shroud of Turin comes from the fact that, in spite of the sufferings it expresses, a peace, a majesty, a powerful contained energy emanates from it, that invite us to hope. The words of Pope Francis in this regard are worth recalling:
And yet, at the same time, the face in the shroud conveys a great peace. This tortured body expresses a sovereign majesty. It lets a pure and calm energy shine through and it seems to say to us: “Trust and don’t to lose hope.” The power of God’s love, the power of the Risen One overcomes everything.”

It is this trust that we will affirm on June 21 by dedicating FIAMC to the Sacred Heart. It is this hope and this strength that we will ask from Christ through this consecration.
