| OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNAECOLOGISTS Rome, June 17-20, 2001 |
| IN POVASKÁ BYSTRICA, SLOVAKIA Ivan Wallenfels, M.D., Dep. of Surgery, Hospital Povaská Bystrica, Slovakia It is clear, that in the present world only in Catholic hospitals Catholic gynecologists and obstetritions, as well as nurses, will be able to work fully and without any obstacles according to the teaching of the Catholic Church. Once understanding this, we would like to introduce you our idea of such a wider Catholic centre in the place, where we live: Povaská Bystrica is a town of approximately 40.000 inhabitants in the hearth of Slovakia, surrounded by a beautiful nature. It was a small village 60 years ago, an arsenal factory built in thirties of the last century made from the village a "modern town". A town without any real history and culture, with people living in blocks of flats, with minimum working opportunities, limited sport and leisure time facilities. Except of pubs there are minimum places for young people to meet and spend time, the result of all this is alcoholism, drug abuse, divorses etc. in part of inhabitants of the town. Although Catholic Church has a strong position in Slovakia and almost 70 % of people consider themselves to be Christians, eleven years after anticommunistic revolution many of them are unable to be really free in their minds and hearts. Our proposal is to create a Catholic charity, educational and healthcare Centre as a "refuge" for those, who are looking for love, hope and faith, with special emphasis /but not only/ on the education and protection of unborn life. The most important from our view is the hospital with a department of Catholic gynaecology and obstetrics, neonathology, and out-patient's department, maybe in the future also with other departments based on Catholic principles. The other parts of the project are centres for spiritual education, education and consulting with regard to responsible parenthood, natural family planning, prevention of drug abuse, alcoholism, protection against the activities of sects etc. The charity part would be in charge of administering help to pregnant and maltreated women in need and also preschool facilities. The ground for the project is 26.000 sq.m, near the chapel, which will be a part of the whole Centre, easily reachable by people from the town. We have got already relatively detailed architectonic description of the Centre and The Town Assembly promised to promote us in our effort, with a preferential right to buy the ground. The Project is exceptional in its complexity and there is nothing of its kind in Slovakia till now. We are on the beginning of our way, trying to inform people about it, to explain the necessity of such a centre and to persuade them, that not a small group of Catholics, but all of us need it. We know that there is a lot of prayers, effort and work to do to realize the idea. We don't have money in the moment to built any of the above facilities, but we believe, that the first and the most important is faith to the God, hope and love together with a desire for the better world. The Project is our way, how to do it, and we believe, that we can encourage you and also other people in Slovakia and maybe all around the world. Please, support us with your prayer or any other way, as well as we want to support anybody who tries his best with Jesus in his hearth. Thank you.
