FIAMC PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS TO THE HOLY FATHER
Holy Father,
on behalf of all the participants in the International Congress "Life-Sustaining Treatments and Vegetative State: Scientific Advances and Ethical Dilemmas",
I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for having received us today in this audience.
400 people coming from 42 different countries from all the continents participated in the Congress, which was organized by the World Federation of Catholic Medical Associations (FIAMC) and the Pontifical Academy for Life (PAV). Among the participants not only there were many Catholics, but there were also Christians from other denominations, Jews, Muslims, and Hinduists.
All of them felt that the issue of the vegetative state, which is related to one of the frontiers of life, poses important questions and challenges many of the ideas deriving from our anthropology, i.e., the meaning of human suffering, the right to life, the foundations of civil living together, and solidarity within social relations.
At times it is rather difficult to find solutions to these issues; in many parts of the world, in fact, following the decisions of courts, too often people are intending to provide only the simplest answer, i.e. nutrition and hydration withdrawal, raising at least a doubt that such solution is actually a widespread kind of euthanasia by omission. The debate involves Catholics themselves, who are at times torn as they make drastic decisions inside hospitals and in the context of those institutions which are linked to our faith.
In order to open a discussion on such difficult issues, FIAMC and PAV invited some of the most authoritative scientists and clinicians specialized in vegetative state and life-sustaining treatments, as well as illustrious experts in bioethics.
FIAMC and PAV clearly understand the values at stake in choosing nutrition and hydration withdrawal for vegetative state patients and for all the other sick people to whom such procedure would inevitably end up being applied, as witnessed by a great number of cases. FIAMC and PAV cannot, however, ignore that the debate is still open, and that, precisely because of this, it needs to be addressed by the Magisterium of the Church, perhaps more so than other issues.
Your word, Holy Father, has constantly accompanied medical doctors, nurses, other health care workers and sick people in the first 25 years of your Pontificate. It has given light, meaning, horizons and hope to our profession, as we stand beside those who suffer, and we serve life. We are deeply grateful to you for this.
As a small, but significant gift to express our gratitude, FIAMC has produced a Cd-Rom with all your speeches and documents on the issues related to our profession. The work is available to medical doctors all over the world, as a useful study, research and reference tool which will inspire our actions at the service of man. Today we are happy to deliver this work in your hands.
A few weeks ago, receiving the priests from Rome, you did not hesitate to address them in the Roman dialect with two sentences that struck me (I am a Neurologist from Rome who emigrated to Udine, a town in North-Eastern Italy), and that I cherish deep in my heart. "Damose da fa! (Let's get to work!)", you said. In the field of the vegetative state there is much work to do, in order to understand the process of the brain damage causing the dysfunction, in order to make the procedures of diagnosis more accurate, in order to better understand, also with the help of new technologies, how healing processes work, in order to make the efforts of rehabilitation more efficient.
In the Roman dialect you also added: "Volemose bene! (Let's love each other!)". In their simplicity, these two words contain a program for action addressing all those who study ethics, politicians, and those who manage health care institutions.
Let's love each other and let's love Man! Only in this way will medicine and the whole world not obscure their humanity.

L'INDIRIZZO DI SALUTO DEI PRESIDENTE DELLA FIAMC
In apertura di udienza, il Presidente della
Federazione Internazionale delle Associazioni dei Medici Cattolici (FIAMC),
Gian Luigi Gigli, ha rivolto al Santo Padre il seguente indirizzo di saluto:Padre Santo,
a nome di tutti i partecipanti al congresso Internazionale «Life-Sustaining Treatments: Scientific.Advances and Ethical Ditemmas» desidero ringraziarLa dai profondo del cuore per averci ricevuto oggi in Udienza.
Al Congresso, organizzato dalla Federazione Internazionale delle Associazioni dei Medici Cattolici (FIAMC) e dalla Pontificia Accademia per la Vita hanno partecipato 400 Congressisti, provenienti da 42 Paesi di tutti i Continenti. Tra di essi non vi sono solo cattolici, ma cristiani di altre confessioni, ebrei, musulmani, induisti.
Tutti si sono sentifi interrogati da un tema che, da una delle frontiere della vita, come lo stato vegetativo, mette in discussione le stesse nostre concezioni antropologiche, il senso della sofferenza umana, il diritto, alla vita, i fondamenti della civile convivenza, la solidarietà all'interno delle relazioni sociali.
Si tratta di argomenti talvolta di difficile soluzione, ai quali, in molte parti dei mondo, sulla spinta, anche di decisioni di tribunali, si sta cercando troppo spesso di offrire solo la rispostà più semplice, quella della sospensione della idratazione e della nutrizione, sollevando almeno il. dubbio di una generalizzata forma di eutanasia per omissione. Il dibattito coinvoige lo stesso mondo cattolico, lacerato talvoita net prendere decisioni senza ritorno all'interno degli ospedali e delle istituzioni che si richiamano alla nostra fede.
Per discutere di terni cosi difficili, la FIAMC e la PAV hanno riunito a Roma alcuni dei migliori clinici e dei più illustri scienziati che si occupano dello stato vegetativo e dei sostegno aile funzioni vitali, insiemê ad insigni esperti di bioetica.
La FIAMC e la PAV percepiscono con chiarezza i valori in gioco nella scelta di sospendere la idratazione e la nutrizione ai malati in stato vegetativo ed apgli aitri casi ai quali tale procedura finirebbe inevitabilmente per allargarsi, come numerosi esempi testimoniano. La FIAMC e la PAV non possono tuttavia ignorare che il dibattito o ancora molto aperto e proprio per questo necessita, torse più di altri temi, della parola del Magistero della Chiesa.
La Sua parola, Padre Santo, ha accompagnato costantemente medici, infermieri, altri operatori sanitari e i malati nei trascorsi primi 25 anni del suo Pontificato. Essa ha dato luce, significato, orizzonti e speranze alla nostra professione di accompagnatori di coloro che soffrono e di servitori della vita. Di tutto questo Le siamo profondamente grati.
Quale piccolo, ma significativo dono per esprimere il nostro grazie, la FIAMC ha realizzato un CdRom contenente tutti i Suoi interventi sui temi che riguardano la nostra professione, mettendolo a disposizione dei medici di tutto il mondo quale agile strumento di studio, di ricerca, di consultazione per ispirare le nostre azioni a servizio dell'uorno. Oggi, siamo lieti di consegnare quest'opera nelle Sue mani.
Poche settimane fa, Padre Santo, ricevendo i preti romani. Lei non ha esitato a rivolgersi loro in dialetto romanesco, con due frasi che a me, neurologo romano emigrato ad Udine, sono rimaste nel cuore. «Damose da fa!» ha detto. Nel campo dello stato vegetativo c'è tanto da fare, per comprendere i meccanismi dei danno cerebrale che genera la disfunzione, per rendere più sicuro il procedimento diagnostico, per capire più a fondo, grazie anche all'apporto delle nuove tecnologie, i meccanismi che favoriscono i processi riparativi, per orientare a maggiore efficacia gli sforzi riabilitativi. .
Sempre' in romanesco, aveva poi aggiunto: «Volemose bene!». Nella loro semplicità, in queste due parole è condensato un programma di azione per coloro che studiano l'etica, per i politici, per coloro che reggono le istituzioni sanitarie.
Vogliamoci bene e vogliamo bene all'Uomo! Solo cosi la medicina ed il Mondo intero non oscureranno la toro umanità.
