“Have you received the vaccine yet?” People ask this question many times a day.

Officially, the answer is “Yes.” Based on my health risk factors, my role as a healthcare provider, and my family, I decided to begin the vaccination sequence.

The decision to receive the COVID-19 Vaccine is a personal one. Each individual must choose based on their medical history, age, social and religious beliefs.

Complicating this matter is conflicting information, the politicization of the pandemic, and concerns about the use of aborted fetal cell lines in the vaccine’s research and production. Individuals must take the efficacy and safety of the vaccines into consideration. Multiple opinions on the ethical use of these vaccines exist in print and visual media.

The Catholic Medical Association issued “Physician Support for Ethical Vaccines,” a joint statement with the American Association of Pro-life OB/GYN’s, American College of Pediatricians, and Christian Medical and Dental Association. This statement discusses the four leading vaccines research, production methods, and ethical considerations.

The CMA also published the Press Release, “Information Regarding Degrees of Responsibility of Vaccine Usage,” which includes links to an analysis by the National Catholic Bioethics Center and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The CMA recognizes as an association that the world is facing a grave situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. In the absence of or delay in the availability of morally developed alternatives, the use of vaccines as presented in the NCBC and USCCB documents reflects prudent guidance to those having ethical concerns for receiving or administrating such COVID-19 vaccines.

As individuals and as an organization, we must continue to express our opposition to therapeutics’ development using cell lines from the most vulnerable of human beings, the aborted fetus, in the false claim of the “Common Good.” Research has demonstrated that there are alternative moral methods for such research to protect public health.

In continued service to our members, the Healthcare Policy Committee of the CMA presents a letter template for you to download and use to express objection to unethical vaccine development and demand the development of ethically acceptable alternatives. You will find contact information for vaccine developers below.

We will come through this together, physically and spiritually.

On behalf of the CMA Board, be assured of our continued prayers and support during this crisis.
