MaterCare International (MCI) is pleased to welcome our new pope, His Holiness Pope Francis. During his time as Cardinal and as Archbishop of Buenos Aries, he gained a reputation for humility, and a concern for the impacts of global capitalism on the poorest of the poor. The name he has chosen is, appropriately, an expression of the man formed in the ministries which have brought him to this point.

Mothers, especially those underserved by their communities, their governments, and the world, suffer unlike any other population of people. When speaking of the poor, mothers and their children comprise the majority. While in the developing world mothers suffer from physical and economic neglect, in the western world mothers often suffer from what Pope Francis calls “the spiritual poverty of our time”.

MCI has been working for over a decade to bring hope and care to those in need in Kenya, Haiti, Ghana, and Nigeria. We are dedicated to Pope Francis’ message that we are all called to serve the poor, the poorest of which are mothers. You too can be a part of this commitment by joining our community of supporters in a variety of capacities.

Pope Francis’ name will be seen as a source of hope to many around the world. In addition to his humility, simplicity, and commitment to the poor, we would note his extraordinary capacity to reach beyond the widely shared assumptions of his time and become a bridge builder who sought reconciliation where others could see only opposition. When speaking to a group of diplomats this March, Pope Francis stated, “Fighting poverty, both material and spiritual, building peace and constructing bridges: these, as it were, are the reference points for a journey that I want to invite each of the countries here represented to take up. But it is a difficult journey, if we do not learn to grow in love for this world of ours. Here too, it helps me to think of the name of Francis, who teaches us profound respect for the whole of creation and the protection of our environment, which all too often, instead of using for the good, we exploit greedily, to one another’s detriment.”

Join us in the fight against poverty by demanding positive maternal health options for mothers and their children. Our supporters can participate in the MCI mission of eradicating material and spiritual poverty among mothers by becoming members of our on-line community, they can become monthly donors to our mission, they can join us in volunteering, and they can donate in non-financial ways.
