The divine person of Jesus Christ has two natures, divine and human. As God, Jesus has a divine intellect and will. With these, He knows everything perfectly, loves and chooses perfectly. As man, Jesus possesses a human soul having and intellect and will. With these, He thinks and loves as a human man. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is having a devotion to his sacred human loving heart, a heart that loved so much that his physical heart was pierced on the Cross after which blood and water flowed, symbolizing the sacraments.

It was the Sacred Heart of Jesus that mourned for sinners who rejected and would reject him. This same Sacred Heart of Jesus also rejoiced over all who accepted him and would accept him till time ceases.

What does Jesus want? He wants our hearts. He wants all of us. Where is your heart? Are you totally his, or is your heart divided? Remember the words of Jesus, “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24)

Because we live in a fallen world with wounded human natures, we need help. Thanks to Jesus, help has arrived, is here and is on the way. God is not just satisfied being with us, he wants to be in us. This is the role of the sacraments. Each time we receive a sacrament, God infuses his very life, otherwise known as sanctifying or saving grace into our souls. If people truly knew and understood this, they would receive the sacraments as often as possible. The two sacraments we can receive most frequently are confession and the Eucharist.

Then there are the sacramentals. There are seven sacraments and countless sacramentals. I like to think of the sacramentals like catalysts or enzymes which do not change a chemical reaction but speeds them up. The sacramentals dispose a person to utilize the graces from the sacraments more efficaciously, helping us have undivided hearts. Perhaps the most common sacramental is the Holy Rosary. My prayer is that all of us frequent the sacraments, and make use of the sacramentals, so our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus will grow in our human hearts.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!
