CMA member and leading oncologist, Dr. Robert Collins, relates powerful true
stories about God’s grace and healing in his new book, You Visited Me: Grace and Healing in
the Modern Medical Center.

In the midst of the seemingly cold, stark, medical center, Dr. Collins reveals how God’s love is present by sharing stories in which he and his patients alike experience love, trust, hope, forgiveness, gratitude, answered prayers, and meaning in suffering. Witnessing these everyday miracles is what led Dr. Collins on his own spiritual journey from an agnostic to a Catholic physician.

Dr. Collins explains, “In this place of suffering, fear, and death—where God’s love is most needed—God’s love is most present. The book’s stories of grace and healing in this unlikely place awaken the reader to the wonder all around us and to the good news that God visits us wherever we are.”

Dr. Collins is a professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he specializes in blood cancers. He directs the Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapy Program and the Combined Adult and Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Program. He is a recipient of the Watson Award, the institution’s highest honor in clinical
medicine.

“In the highly technocratic world of medicine today, it is refreshing to read a book by a professor at a top-tier university medical school, who sees medicine as a vocation to share in the mission of the Divine Physician,” said Bishop James Conley, CMA’s National Episcopal Adviser.

For CMA Vice President Dr. Greg Burke, the book resonated: “As a clinician, I really resonated with those stories and saw parallels in my own practice of medicine,” he said. “Dr. Collins included multiple patient stories from his hematology/oncology practice that touch the heart. The clinical stories are short, and this is a plus for busy doctors and other healthcare professionals who are often challenged by many time constraints.”
